Trulli, Caves and Pearl of Baroque (8 days/7 nights)

Puglia is a treasure trove of art, history, and nature. A land of sun and hospitality, it’s located on a strip of land in southeastern Italy, in a strategic position in the heart of the Mediterranean. Centuries of history and a range of charming landscapes are just some of the reasons why it’s such a unique destination, one where you’ll enjoy some truly unforgettable experiences.

ITINERARY

1.day: Bari
Afternoon arrival in Bari or surroundings. Accommodation, dinner and overnight in the hotel.

BARI
Although this is a large, modern-looking city, it was already founded in pre-Roman period. A wonderful group of Romanesque churches encircles the old town centre and Bari retains the atmosphere, narrow uphill streets, stone steps and walls of a compact, mediaeval hamlet standing o a small peninsula that divides the harbor in two, with three churches in the centre.

2.day: Gargano
Breakfast and departure in the region of Gargano. Afternoon visit to Monte Saint Angelo with its sanctuary, castle and the ancient quarters. After the visit arrival and accommodation in the hotel. Dinner and overnight.

3.day: Castellana Grotte – Alberobello – Locorotondo – Ostuni
Breakfast in the hotel. In the morning short visit to the Grotte di Castellana, also the biggest speleologist site of Italy. Further to Alberobello and visit of the “Trulli”, national monument since 1930. Tasting of typical products. Further to Locorotondo and the white city Ostuni. Visit. Accommodation in the hotel, dinner and overnight.

ALBERBELLO
This interesting and particulary picturesque town consist entirely of famous “trulli” (there are about a thousand); low buildings with a conical roof.

CASTELLANA CAVES
Thanks to their immense size and depth and the numerous stalagmites and stalactites, they are without doubt the most spectacular caves in Italy. They are 60 metres under ground and extend for around 3 km.

4.day: Basilicata – Sassi
Breakfast in the hotel. Meeting with the guide and departure to Matera, situated in an area of uneven relief. A calcareous belt 350/400m thick, dominated by a clayed upland, overhanging a deep valley and two natural hollows. The Sassi, a group of troglodyte houses are hollowed in these slopes. Further to Altamura and visit of the Cathedral, whose portal is perhaps the most beautiful in Puglia. Visit of Gravina di Puglia and the Cathedral. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight.

5.day: Lecce – Otranto
Breakfast in the hotel and departure for Lecce, especially famous for its baroque architecture. Visit to the historical centre. Further to Otranto and visit its Cathedral and its castle. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight.

LECCE
This city is mainly famous for its extraordinary Baroque architecture, whose exuberant decorations are supported by the nature of the local stone, which is golden and soft to be scalpel.

6.day: Taranto and the Magna- Greece
Breakfast in the hotel. Meeting with the guide and departure to Taranto, town of 2 seas. In the afternoon further to Grottaglie, known for its ceramic, and to Martina Franca, famous for its historical centre where one can breathe the air of the baroque salantine style. Return to the hotel, dinner, overnight.

TARANTO
This was an important Spartan colony in the 8th century BC and subsequently a Roman settlement. The old town is on an island, between the gulf and the huge, internal port.

7.day: Castel del Monte- Bari
After breakfast departure to Castel del Monte for a visit to its castle, residence of Federico II di Svevia, octagonal prism with eight towers having the same shape. In the afternoon departure for Bari or surroundings, accommodation in the hotel, dinner and overnight.

CASTEL DEL MONTE
This is the most beautiful building in Puglia and one of the most delightful mediaeval castles ever built. Its characteristic features include the perfect balance of its eight towers, commissioned by Frederick II in 1240.

8.day: Bari
After breakfast departure to the airport and a farewell.

 

The price includes:

– 7 half boards, starting with dinner at the 1st day untill breakfast at the 8th day
